He weighs in at 7lbs 9oz. Kristi and Seth are doing great and Ted sounds like a very proud dad. The Rolls are at Christ Hospital in Mt. Auburn. If you want to visit, they would love to see you, but please call first to make sure it’s a good time to come. They are currently in room 9075, but that will change later this morning. If you call Christ and ask for the Roll room in the maternity ward they should be able to direct you to the right place. All Hamilton County residents and employees are invited to bring materials such as automotive fluids, solvents, cleaners, pesticides and lawn chemicals, old gasoline, pool chemicals, batteries, etc for proper disposal and recycling. These FREE events will be held this Saturday April 26 at the Bayer Corporation in Addyston and Saturday May 3 at Ethicon Endo-Surgery in Blue Ash. Please see our web link at http://www.hcdoes.org/sw/HSH/03HHM.pdf for more information. All events will run from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. Judy ---------- From: Cathy Neeley [SMTP:neeley@setel.com] Sent: Tuesday, May 13, 2003 3:37 PM To: Undisclosed-Recipient:; Subject: EKSC News & Notes - Total Lunar Eclipse Viewing! Total Lunar Eclipse Viewing! The East Kentucky Science Center will host a lunar eclipse observing party on Thursday, May 15. The party will be held near Stone Crest Golf Course, on Maggie Mountain in Prestonsburg, beginning at 9 p.m. and lasting to midnight. From this vantage point you will get a spectacular view of the eclipse as the full moon glides through the shadow of the Earth, starting about half an hour after sunset. The darkest part of the eclipse will occur at 11:40 p.m. when the moon may appear very red in color as sunlight is bent through the shadow of the Earth. A lunar eclipse can only happen at the time of the full moon when the earth is between the sun and the moon. If the geometry is just right, the moon can pass through the Earth's shadow and the moon can almost disappear. The next total lunar eclipse visible in North America will be on November 9 this year. The eclipse on May 15 is the best one to view if the night sky is clear, according to Raymond Shubinski, EKSC director. Along with the lunar eclipse, the public will have the chance to see Jupiter, Saturn, star clusters, and may constellations. The event is free and open to the public. Star Parties are part of the Science Center's Mobile Observatory Outreach Education Program and are made possible through the assistance of the East Kentucky Regional GEAR-UP Project, Music-Carter automotive dealership and Citizens National Bank. The event will be cancelled if the sky is cloudy or in case or rain. However, if the sky is partly clouded and stars are visible, the event will be held as planned. In the case of the possibility of rain, listen to local radio stations, call the Science Center at (606) 889-0303, or visit the Center's website, www.wedoscience.org . Please bring RED lensed flashlights only to the observing session. White light limits night-time viewing. ot From bortner@physics.uc.edu Wed May 14 14:18:46 2003 Received: from physunc.phy.uc.edu (physunc.phy.uc.edu [129.137.4.6]) by tabby.kudra.com (8.12.8p1/8.12.6) with ESMTP id h4EIIjuP009936 for ; Wed, 14 May 2003 14:18:46 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from bortner@physics.uc.edu) Received: from bethe.geop.uc.edu (bethe.geop.uc.edu [10.44.6.245]) by physunc.phy.uc.edu (8.9.3p2/8.9.3) with ESMTP id OAA22071 for ; Wed, 14 May 2003 14:18:36 -0400 (EDT) Received: from lab-manager.physics.uc.edu (lab-manager.brah.uc.edu [10.42.106.28]) by bethe.geop.uc.edu (8.9.3p2/8.9.3) with ESMTP id OAA06764 for ; Wed, 14 May 2003 14:18:38 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <4.3.2.7.2.20030514141230.00b02ae0@bethe.phy.uc.edu> X-Sender: bortner@bethe.phy.uc.edu X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 4.3.2 Date: Wed, 14 May 2003 14:18:37 -0400 To: UCMC@kudra.com From: Larry Bortner Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed Subject: [Ucmc] Eclipse in Cincinnati X-BeenThere: ucmc@kudra.com X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: UC Mountaineering Club Discussion and Trip announcement list List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 14 May 2003 18:18:46 -0000 In parallel with Judy's announcement, The Cincinnati Observatory in Hyde Park is having an open house Thursday, May 15, from 1 p.m. to midnight, with viewing of the eclipse, Jupiter, and Saturn through their telescope available, as well as tours of the facility. Saturday, June 21, from 2 pm on My place in Newport, 27 15th Street Please bring: Yourself and anybody else who is interested. Food and beverages to share. (If you can=96 there is always enough= =20 to go around at these events.) I will provide Larry cookies . Garments to dye, bleach, batik, paint. The standard blank tie dye item is a white cotton tee shirt. =95 White or some light color because the dyes won't show up on a=20 darker background. =95 Cotton because the fiber reactive dyes I have work best on cotton,= =20 silk, or rayon. =95 But! I=92m trying out some new dyes this year that supposedly= work=20 on nylon (polyester). So bring those blends in. (If the material is coated,= =20 the dye probably won=92t stick.) =95 A tee shirt because that's what most people wear. But you can tie= =20 dye sweats or underwear or towels or sheets or bandanas or hats or anything= =20 else that=92s made of the fabrics mentioned. Clothing Suppliers =95 The K-Martacross the street from me always has a good selection= of=20 white cotton clothing. There's a much larger selection of clothing items=20 for women-- dresses of all types, skirts, wraps, tops. =95 Online: Check out http//www.dharmatrading.com/clothing.html This= =20 site has a lot of clothing "blanks" you can order. This is the company I=20 get my supplies from and they have been reliable to date. Techniques =95 Standard tie dye: Tie the fabric, presoak it in washing soda,= apply=20 the dye, let it rest for 1-48 hours in a plastic bag, rinse it until it=20 runs clear, wash it with detergent in hot water. Item is now colorfast=20 (won=92t bleed). 2-50 hours elapsed time. =95 Pigment tie dye (the new dye): Tie it, dye it, let it dry= naturally=20 (12-24 hours), heat set it with an iron or 15 minutes in a dryer, wash it.= =20 Supposedly colorfast. 24 hours. =95 Discharge dyeing: tie or wrap an item that already has darker=20 color, apply a bleach solution as you would ordinarily apply the dye, rinse= =20 with vinegar, wash it. Results are a reverse pattern in white on the dark=20 background instead of the various colors on white. I'm done some old jeans= =96=20 interesting effect. 1-2 hours. =95 Batik: Draw a pattern on the material with pencil or water soluble= =20 ink, go over that pattern with hot wax, then dye, rest, rinse, wash,=20 remove the wax, and wash again. Where the wax was the dye isn=92t. Saturday, June
21,= from 2 pm on
My place in= Newport,= 27 15th Street
Please bring:
Yourself and anybody else who is interested.
= ;Food and beverages= to share. (If you can=96 there is always enough to go around at= these events.) I will provide Larry cookies .
Garments to dye, bleach, batik, paint.=
The standard blank tie dye item is a= white cotton tee shirt.
=95       White or some light color because= the dyes won't show up on a darker background.
=95       Cotton because the fiber reactive= dyes I have work best on cotton, silk, or rayon.
=95       = But! I=92m trying out some= new dyes this year that= supposedly work on nylon= (polyester). So bring those blends in. (If the material is= coated, the dye probably won=92t stick.)
=95       A= tee shirt because that's= what most people wear. But you can tie dye sweats or underwear or towels or= sheets or bandanas or hats or anything else that=92s made of the fabrics= mentioned.=20
Clothing Suppliers
=95       The = K-Martacross the street from= me always has a good selection of white cotton clothing. There's a much= larger selection of clothing items for women-- dresses of all types,= skirts, wraps, tops.
=95       Online: Check out http//www.dharmatrading.com/clothing.html = This site has a lot of clothing "blanks" you can order.= This is the company I get my supplies from and they have been reliable to= date.=20
Techniques
=95       Standard tie dye: Tie the fabric, presoak= it in washing soda, apply the dye,= let it rest for 1-48 hours in a plastic bag,= rinse it until it runs clear, wash it with detergent in hot water. Item is now= colorfast (won=92t bleed). 2-50 hours elapsed time.
=95       Pigment tie dye (the new dye):= Tie it, dye= it, let it dry naturally (12-24= hours), heat set it with an iron or 15= minutes in a dryer, wash it. Supposedly= colorfast. 24 hours.
=95       Discharge dyeing:  tie or= wrap an item that already has darker color, apply a bleach solution as you= would ordinarily apply the dye, rinse with vinegar, wash it. Results are a= reverse pattern in white on the dark background instead of the various= colors on white. I'm done some old jeans=96 interesting effect. 1-2= hours.
=95       Batik: Draw a pattern on the= material with pencil or water soluble ink, go over that pattern with hot= wax,  then dye, rest, rinse, wash, remove the wax, and wash again.= Where the wax was the dye isn=92t. I won=92t have any wax, but Nina will be= having a batik party shortly and suggests base dyeing garments where you= don=92t want the wax pattern to be white in the finished product. 3= hours-???
=95       Faux batik: This consists of= applying a resist, or gutta, to the fabric as you would wax. Results are= similar to batik, but the resists that I have are water soluble. Some are= black or metallic and the color remains after the resist washes away. I= have several books of designs. 2-50 hours.
=95       Paint: Thicken the dye and apply= with a paint brush. Use your item as an artist=92s canvas. 2-50 hours.

I can show you how to do some of these things or you can glance through= one of my instructional books and figure it out yourself.

There will be some families with younger children.

We'll eat around six. I have a large gas grill.

You can do any combination of the following: Tie, dye, eat, drink, be merry.=

Directions
=95       get on Interstate 471 in Cincinnati or= Northern Kentucky
=95       take= the Grand Avenue exit
=95       coming from Cincinnati, take a= right at the end of the exit, onto Grand
=95       coming from further south in= Kentucky, the exit feeds you directly onto Grand
=95       you'l= l come to a light shortly, with the Newport Plaza strip mall to your left= (Blockbuster, Sears Hardware, Remke)
=95       go straight through the light; the= road is now Carothers
=95       follo= w Carothers up the hill= (strip mall still on your left, restaraunts on your right)
=95       go through the next light (a right= would take you into the Kmart lot) or= park in the K-Mart parking lot= and walk from there, crossing Monmouth.

If you are interested in learning lots to helpful tips on how to build a campfire and/or if you are interested in learning how to make fire by "rubbing two sticks together", check out the "Traditional Fire Workshop" on July 12th. If you are interested in learning about some wild edible plants, the "Wild Edible Plants Workshop" on July 26th is an incredible opportunity. Please have Victoria visit http://www.bestfriends.com or email info@bestfriends.com This is an animal sanctuary in Utah where all kinds of animals go and retire for life. Not one is EVER put to sleep just because no one "wants it". They also have a network of volunteers throughout the US that transport the animals out to Utah. There are some inspiring stories on the site. There is another website she can check out to find local sanctuaries: http://www.ecn.purdue.edu/~laird/animal_rescue/shelters but be sure she finds a sanctuary, not just a shelter (which may euthanize).
